Mastery

Mastery as spoken about in this context is in reference to mastery over one’s own tendency to follow unconscious impulses. This does not refer exclusively to destructive patterns that result in the obvious experience of suffering, but to all patterns, for all conditioned response is based on historical data and therefore denies all possibility of being totally present with what Is. By being fully accountable and responsible for one’s actions (not the reactions of others) in the present and by consciously responding to life rather than reacting ‘knee jerk’ reflex to it, one opens to limitlessness Consciousness.

In order to live fully functionally we have to address all areas of unconscious relationship to life, and therefore make conscious choices (the right use of will) not to create unnecessary suffering for ourselves or others. Mastery is not solely a demonstration of wisdom-generated control over the physical, mental, and emotional faculties and the patterns of behavioural response regarding their interpretation of Reality, though it includes this. It is a complete willingness to face whatever might arise as a result of engaging fully with life itself without succumbing to the temptation to retreat through fear of revealing personal challenge or being manoeuvred toward change.

Mastery then is not a demonstration of perfection in an egoic sense (which in itself is delusion), rather it is a willingness to simply be present with what Is, whilst suspending judgement and identification with anything (without exception). By living in unconscious reaction or avoiding shadow aspects through fear, there is a perpetuation of suffering due to the postponement of experiencing the totality of what Is True in This, the ever present Now. Mastery is stepping courageously into the totality of What already and always Is So, regardless of what may come.

Peaceful Existence

The Ashram and all community members are committed to living with consciousness, and therefore it promotes a low-impact, compassionate lifestyle. We recognise that our actions carry consequences, and therefore, where possible we will not knowingly support institutions, business ventures, and multi-nationals which abuse, manipulate and disrespect the right of each individual to live in freedom, be it human, animal, vegetable or mineral. Animals are given utmost respect and are treated in a manner which honours them prior to their function in the usual human/animal relationship. We support animals in their unconditional existence, and will cultivate a very conscious approach to relationships between the human/animal (and vegetable) kingdoms beyond the consideration of how animals might practically serve humanity’s casual requirements. There will be emphasis on mutually harmonious co-existence and respectful integration. It will not be appropriate to be unconscious for convenience sake. For this reason those living and staying at the Ashram respect a vegan diet and all Ashram patronage endeavours to support ethical enterprises. Our commitment to non-violence includes avoiding violence toward ourselves and others through unconscious submission to dysfunctional behaviour patterns.
